What this template is for
Use it when a job post asks for a cover letter, or when you want a hiring manager to read past the first line of your resume. It is short on purpose. Most cover letters are too long and repeat what the resume already says.
The four paragraphs follow how a hiring manager reads: do you want this job, can you do it, what else do you bring, and what happens next.

What is in it, section by section
- Name and contactYour name in blue, with your email and phone under it, then a rule.
- Date and greetingThe date, then "Dear" and the person's name, or "Dear hiring manager".
- Why this roleTwo sentences on why you want this role at this company, that only you could write.
- ProofOne achievement that shows you can do this job, with its result.
- Second strengthThe other thing the post asks for, and your evidence.
- Close and sign-offWhat you would like to happen next, then "Kind regards" and your name.
How to fill it in
- Read the job post and mark the two things they want most.
- Answer the first in the proof paragraph and the second in the strength paragraph.
- Name the company and the role. A letter that could go to anyone reads that way.
- Keep it to the four paragraphs and well under a page.
- If you use the modern resume, keep this letter's blue. Both templates share the same accent.
Questions
Do I still need a cover letter?
If the post asks for one, always. If it is optional, a short letter that is clearly about this job can help, especially when you are changing careers.
Who should I address it to?
The hiring manager by name if you can find it. Otherwise "Dear hiring manager" is fine.
How long should a cover letter be?
Three to five short paragraphs, well under a page. This template has four.
Can I reuse one letter for every job?
Keep the structure and rewrite the first two paragraphs each time. Those are the ones a hiring manager reads.
Use it in Supernatural
Supernatural: everything your business runs on, with Blue as your part-time admin. Word is one of its apps. In your workspace, you ask Blue for “a cover letter for the role I am applying to”. Blue starts from this template, writes in what you give it, and leaves [brackets] where something is missing. Before it makes the document, Blue shows you which template it chose and what it will write. Nothing is made until you say yes.
