What this template is for

Use it when a customer got a clear result from your work and has agreed to be named. A case study is about someone else, which is why readers believe it. Builders, agencies, accountants, training firms and resellers use them in proposals and on their websites.

Every figure and every quote in a case study must be real and approved by the customer. The template leaves them in brackets so nothing goes out by accident.

What is in it, section by section

  • Label and headline"How [Customer] [achieved the result]", with one sentence on the result and its figure under it.
  • Three figuresA row of three figures, each with what changed.
  • The customerWho they are, in two sentences.
  • The challengeWhat was hard, and what it cost them.
  • The solutionWhat they did with you, step by step.
  • The resultsEach result with its figure.
  • QuoteThe customer's words as they said them, with their name and title.

How to fill it in

  1. Ask the customer first, and agree on what you may share.
  2. Take the figures from records, not memory. Ask the customer to confirm them.
  3. Write the challenge in the customer's words, from a short call with them.
  4. Send the quote back to the customer for approval before you publish.
  5. Put the strongest figure first in the row of three.

Questions

Do I need the customer's permission?

Yes. Get written permission to use their name, logo, figures and quote, and let them read the final version before it goes out.

What if the customer will not be named?

Describe them by industry, size and place, and say the name is withheld at their request. The figures still need their approval.

How long should a case study be?

One or two pages. The three figures and the quote carry most of it.
